- For Immediate Release -

What:

On December 17, 2007, the Islamic Social Services Association, Inc. (ISSA) is launching a public awareness campaign highlighting the contributions of Muslims in Manitoba. “It is our goal to have this public awareness campaign increase awareness of the diversity and contributions of Manitoba’s Muslims and address any negative stereotypes of Muslims in a proactive and conciliatory manner” said Shahina Siddiqui, Executive Director of ISSA. “It is our hope that this will assist in making Manitoba’s communities more welcoming to our new immigrants by providing information about the positive contributions Muslims have made to Manitoba and our nation.”

To celebrate and preview the launch of this campaign that is first of its kind in Canada, a press preview and reception will be held:

Date: December 14, 2007
Location: At: Winnipeg Central Mosque 715 Ellice Avenue
Time: 5 pm to 7 pm.

Background Info

In 2006-07, ISSA held comprehensive consultations with leaders from Manitoba’s Muslim community, as well as representatives from the public at large. Throughout these consultations, participants identified the need for increased public education and awareness, and consequently recommended the development of this public awareness campaign.

The Public Awareness Campaign includes:

  • Billboards and transit advertisements that illustrate the diversity of Manitoba Muslims and their contributions to Manitoba and Canada.
  • A webpage, accessible from www.issaservices.com, featuring easy to read information and educational resources on Muslim contributions throughout history, as well as profiles of Manitoba Muslims.
  • Posters for distribution to schools, libraries and other public institutions, illustrating the main messages of the Public Awareness Campaign. The posters will be complimented with the availability of speakers from ISSA, who can provide information on the public awareness campaign for these institutions and media.
  • Community Cafés - a series of cafés that promote dialogue and community conversations on Manitoba’s Muslims, their faith and culture.

The first component of the public awareness campaign will be launched on December 17, 2007. This component includes the launch of billboards and website information. In January, ISSA will be launching the transit advertisements, posters and will be hosting Community Cafés.

This project is funded in part by Manitoba Labour and Immigration, through funding received by Citizenship and Immigration Canada’s Welcoming Communities Initiative. The objective of the Welcoming Communities Initiative is to promote the strengthened participation of new immigrants in civil society and to foster more inclusive and welcoming communities for new immigrants.
