Introduction to Islam
What is the Qur'an?

Muslims believe the Qur’an to be the Word of God revealed through the arch-angel Jibreel (Gabriel) to the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). The word Qu’ran means: ‘To Recite’. The Qu’ran was revealed to Prophet Muhammad over a period of twenty-three years.

The Qu’ran has been preserved in its original text and language. The Qur’an was not authored by Prophet Muhammad or any other creation of Allah.

Qur’an is a message to all of humanity and is for all times. It does not speak to Muslims alone but to all people who are God conscious. Muslims are obliged to follow, and implement the Qur’an in all aspects of their lives. Ayesha wife of the Prophet (Allah be pleased with her) stated when asked to describe the character of Prophet

Muhammad said "He is the Qur’an".

As the direct word of God the Qur’an is considered as the guide par excellence for Muslims to abide their life by in private as well as public spheres. It serves as the foundation for Islamic law, ethics, and doctrines such as Islamic theology and jurisprudence. The Qur’an is the ultimate source of guidance, healing, solace and knowledge.

“Allah has sent revelation to you Muhammad as was sent to Noah, and the messengers after him: Revelation was sent down to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob and their descendents, including Jesus, Job, Jonah, Aaron and Solomon; and to David Allah gave the Psalms."
Qur’an 4:163
“And Qur’an is a book of exalted power. No falsehood can approach it from before or behind it. It is sent down by the One full of wisdom, worthy of all praise.”
Qur’an 41:42
“Allah has without doubt, sent down the message- the Qu’ran, and Allah will assuredly guard it from corruption.”
Qur’an 15:9
